Jesus' Authority Under Attack

In part 3, we conclude our series on Jesus is in Charge, reflecting on Mark 11:1-33, which reveals Jesus’ unrivaled authority, even when challenged by religious leaders. In this final post, we explore Mark 11:27-33, where Jesus’ authority is questioned, and consider its implications for our lives.
Unshaken Authority
The scribes and elders confronted Jesus, demanding, “By what authority are you doing these things?” Their question was a challenge to His actions in the temple and His bold entry into Jerusalem. Yet, Jesus’ response was not evasive but a masterful display of His sovereignty. By asking about John the Baptist’s authority, He exposed their fear of the crowd and their lack of true authority. Jesus owed them no explanation—He is the King who answers to no one but God.
This encounter underscores a truth central to our theology: Jesus’ authority is absolute. As John 10:18 affirms, no one took His life; He laid it down willingly. Even in the face of opposition, Jesus remained in control, orchestrating His path to the cross according to God’s perfect plan. His authority assures us that nothing—neither human schemes nor spiritual powers—can thwart His purposes.
Claims on Our Lives
Jesus’ authority demands a response. First, we must pray boldly, as Jesus taught in Mark 11:22-25. When was the last time we prayed a “mountain-moving” prayer, trusting God’s power? Second, we must trust Jesus’ promises about the future with the same confidence we have in His work on the cross. John 14:2-3 assures us of His return and our eternal home—let us live with hope and joy in this truth. Finally, because Jesus has all authority, we are called to submit to Him. Obedience to Christ is not burdensome but a joyful response to His lordship.
Application for Today
As Christians, we proclaim Christ’s sovereignty in all things. Let us reject fear of the future, trusting that the One who holds all authority is preparing a place for us. Let us pray with faith, obey with humility, and worship with awe, knowing that Jesus is in charge.
